6 Fashion Trends You Should Be Wearing Fall/Winter 2022

And, of course, I’ll be giving you recommendations for shopping all of these styles on a budget!

Before we jump into it, I want to add a little side note. Fashion is subjective, constantly changing, and always comes back around (as we’ve seen with the resurgence of Y2K trends). If you’re like me and have fun trying new trends, great! But if you’re comfortable with certain styles and don’t want to switch up your wardrobe, that’s great too! The outfit you look best in is the outfit that you like best.

Cropped Puffer Vests

Puffer vests saw a bit of popularity last winter but we really only saw them styled one way (usually with leggings and a long-sleeved t-shirt). This year, I’m seeing them pop up in all the stores with a little update to the silhouette. While you can still find them in a more traditional style, a lot of the ones I’m seeing are cropped. You can also see them in a wide variety of fabrics from leather to corduroy to sherpa. Styling-wise, I’m seeing people get a little more creative with these vests and going a little more edgy with wide-leg jeans or skirts. 

Leather Pants

If you follow my social media accounts, then you already know I’ve been really into this trend lately. Leather is always a popular fabric choice this time of year but, this year, it’s absolutely everywhere! As far as bottoms go, we’ve seen leather leggings (hello, Spanx) trending for the past few years. But now we’re seeing them in a more updated silhouette. (Well, updated if you consider retro styles that are back in style updated.) Particularly, wide-leg and flare leather pants seem to be enjoying a big rise in popularity. This means you can find this trend in pretty much every store and at every price point.

Bomber Jackets

What was it Justin Timberlake said, “What goes around comes all the way back around”? That’s definitely true of the bomber jacket! Originally designed for the military in the early 1900s, these jackets first became a fashion trend in the 60s, regained popularity in the 80s, and saw a resurgence during the grunge movement of the 90s. And it looks like it’s back yet again. I started seeing bomber jackets on the racks towards the end of summer and it seems like it’s been gaining quiet popularity since. Because it’s a piece that continues to come in and out of style, it’s one that I could justify spending a little more on. But, you definitely don’t have to as it’s popping up everywhere, even within affordable brands. What’s really great about this trend is how it can fit any style personality. You can go edgy with a leather bomber jacket or more feminine with something in satin or anything in between! Either way, it’s definitely a fashion trend you should be wearing this season.

Corset Tops

Another trend you should be wearing if you haven’t started yet- tops with a corset style or silhouette. For a few years, the trend for tops seemed to lean towards more slowly, less structured styles. But now we’re seeing that see-saw in the other direction with more fitted styles. The corset top in particular seems to have gone from that one viral Amazon top to being everywhere this season. Perhaps we’re seeing a shift towards more romantic, Victorian-style trends. If so, I would imagine this trend to really peak next Spring. But it’s definitely one I would jump on now because I think it’s just going to continue gaining popularity. Styling-wise, I love to see these types of tops, especially in a long-sleeve, paired with boyfriend or mom jeans and sleek heels for a date night look.

Bejeweled

Sequins, glitter, and beaded embellishments always see a surge in popularity around the holidays. But, with the release of Taylor Swift’s Midnights album, I think we’re going to see more over-the-top sparkly looks than ever before. Particularly, I think tops and dresses with rhinestone embellishments will be really big. We’ve already seen so many people on social media share outfit inspiration for Taylor’s upcoming tour that leans heavily on this bejeweled style element. We’ve also seen a lot of people DIY-ing outfits that Taylor wore in her new music videos. I can see brands absolutely jumping on this trend and piggybacking off of the popularity of both Taylor and this album.

Brights

Typically during the fall and winter, we see a lot of warm oranges, reds, yellows, and greens along with metallics and neutrals. But, one thing that seemed to be everywhere during fashion week and is already popping up in all the stores is brighter color tones. Specifically, hot pinks and rich emerald greens will be a big hit this season. And not just in fashion, I also expect to see these two colors as a very popular holiday decor trend.

What’s On The Way Out

Wondering what you’re going to see less of this year? Well, here are my two cents…

Riding Boots

Honestly, tall boots in general will be harder to find this year as the trends lean more toward combat and lug boot styles. But riding boots in particular seem to be very scarce. If you’re looking for a tall boot style with no or little heel this year, I would suggest going for a western boot.

Ruffles

While not completely out, I see ruffled details starting to fade. A lot of trends this season seem to gear more toward edgy or retro styles. However, I do think these really feminine details will pop back up next spring. 

Boxy, Loose-Fitting Styles

Remember how I said we’re seeing a shift towards more fitted styles? Obviously, if fitted styles are in then we’re going to see less of the boxy, oversized, loose-fitting silhouettes. In particular, I think tunic tops and oversized sweater dresses will be a lot less popular this year. I do think there may be some exceptions with specific styles, such as oversized graphic t-shirt dresses or boxy, cropped tops.
