It’s time to deck the halls, pour the eggnog, and watch all
the movies with totally ridiculous plots! It’s Christmas! And, suffice to say, it’s my favorite time
of the year. I’ve been combing through my favorite holiday décor destinations
(you know, Target and Hobby Lobby) for the past month to find inspiration for
this year’s theme. And now I’m going to share some of my favorite finds for all
the cozy farmhouse Christmas vibes. Last year, I struggled to get into the holiday spirit and almost decided not to bother decorating. Scott and I were both working management positions in busy restaurants and weren’t able to take time off to make the trip home. In fact, I even had to work on Christmas Day, so we barely got to celebrate with just the two of us (check out the post where I talked about celebrating our first solo Christmas). But not this year! Since we finally made the move closer to my hometown earlier this year, we don’t have to miss out on a single moment of the holidays with our family. This will be the first year in almost a decade that I won’t have to either travel hours to spend a few precious days with the family or miss out on the celebrations altogether. Which, naturally, means I’m even more Christmas-crazed than ever! (Can you guess how excited that makes Scott?) I know flocked trees, glittery accents, silver and gold
tones, and cool whites are expected to be big trends in holiday décor this year,
but I’m much more of a classic décor gal. Christmas just wouldn’t feel the same
to me without the tried-and-true red and green color scheme. Plus, by going
with a more classic look, I’ll get to reuse a lot of my old décor. While I want
to buy basically all the pretty Christmas décor displays, I also want to keep a
roof over my head and food in the fridge. So, this year, I’ll be sticking with my beloved, traditional
colors with plenty of greenery and red accents. The holidays for me have always been about warm, cozy vibes.
It’s a time to curl up on the sofa with a cup of cocoa and watch “How the
Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Miracle on 34th Street” (the originals,
naturally). So, I’m planning to pull in some warm wood tones to keep my décor cozy
and a little rustic. I’ve seen several wooden tree collars on the market (like the one I have linked above) but I also built my own last year (check out the post here). It was one of the earliest build projects I attempted so while I’m proud of what I created (with a very limited supply of tools), I plan to build a more detailed version this year. For similar wood tones, I’m also planning to incorporate pinecones for classic and budget-friendly vibes. Bundles of pinecones can be purchased at pretty much any store that sells Christmas decor for a couple of bucks. Or, if you live in an area like mine, found in your backyard for free. As a modern take on Farmhouse décor has become more and more
trendy this year, so have buffalo check patterns. The combination of black and
white is in keeping with the cleaner, more neutral modern style while still incorporating
a Country Farmhouse vibe. Basically, it’s a trend I can totally get behind. And, it’s the trendiest addition I’m making to my décor scheme
this year. I plan to add a few buffalo checks accents in with some inexpensive
ornaments (many of which I found at Wal-Mart) and tabletop décor pieces (like
that adorable reindeer). Using a buffalo check ribbon to add a bow to a wreath
or as garland on a tree is also a really affordable way to incorporate this
trendy pattern. The last piece of my décor scheme is going to be adding in a few metallic accents. Specifically, I’m pulling in a few brass-toned ornaments and accents (though galvanized metal is another fun option that’s been trending the last couple of years). My purpose with this one is really to tie my décor altogether. Scott’s family is Jewish, so we always pay tribute to their traditions with a little Hanukah décor. I found this beautiful menorah last year, so I wanted to make sure the rest of my decor complemented the brass tones. It’s also a great way to incorporate trendy metallics without losing my warm and cozy vibes. Because Christmas is my favorite holiday, it figures that
this is also my favorite time of the year to get crafty. In addition to the tree collar mentioned earlier, I also
have a few other easy DIY projects under my (Santa) hat. But that’s for another blog post.
