What’s my favorite hobby…I mean, other than tackling DIY projects, reading, and obsessing over my fur babies?

Browsing home décor ideas!

I don’t know how many hours a week I waste scrolling through Pinterest boards, window-shopping on Wayfair, and daydreaming about home renovation projects…probably more than is healthy (and a lot more than Scott would like!).

Sadly, right now, all I can do is collect all my ideas and save them for “one day”. Because of our jobs, Scott and I have relocated a few times in the past few years (with plans to relocate again pretty soon). We had previously purchased a house in Charlotte, NC before we were transferred to sunny (and crowded and expensive) Charleston, SC. We left there (and non-too soon) for a job offer in Asheville, NC (the city where we actually first met). But Asheville is only a stop-along-the-way to get us to where we want to be…permanently.

So, we’ve been renting. Which means my home décor dreams are severely limited.

But the day will come (and soon) when we’ll be “home”. And, y’all, I’ll be ready.

I’m rounding up my favorite Farmhouse home décor and renovation ideas

Flooring

Flooring is my number one most-lusted-after home renovation project. It’s also the first thing Scott and I plan to tackle when we buy our forever home (or, at least, the first thing I’ve told Scott we’re tackling).

I hate carpet. I absolutely abhor it.

Why?

Well, I have three reasons…and their names are Jackie, Lola, and Lady Westside. With three dogs running around the house, it’s almost impossible to keep carpet clean. Thankfully, the downstairs of our current home is hardwood laminate (not the best, but easier to keep clean). The 700 square feet of carpet upstairs, however, is my nemesis. The pups are all housebroken, of course, but accidents happen (and so does mud).

When we buy our next home? I’m ripping out every single shred of carpet and replacing it with hardwood flooring.

I am in love with the distressed hardwood trend. One) Because it looks so deliciously rustic and Two) Because if it’s already distressed, it won’t look ruined if the dogs scratch it. My mom replaced most of the floors in her house with a distressed gray washed wood flooring and it’s beautiful. I haven’t picked out an exact shade or stain (yet) but I do know I want something in a lighter color to create a brighter and more open feel, like this Antigua 7” Engineered Oak from Wayfair.

Paint Pallet

I have a ton of paint colors and pallet schemes pinned on my Home Sweet Home Pinterest board. Since paint is a relatively easy home renovation project, it’s another one I plan to tackle early on. I’m obsessed with the idea of combining bright whites with light grays and soft blue-greens.

Painting was a project I had planned to undertake at the house we used to own but never got around to it. For the most part, the house had been painted in shades of white and taupe (not bad, just not what I would have wanted). Except for the kitchen. Oh my God, y’all, that kitchen paint haunts me to this day. Imagine a bowl of split-pea soup…but on your walls. It wasn’t pretty.

My idea of a farmhouse-chic paint scheme looks something like this:

Kitchen

I salivate over pictures of pretty, bright, open farmhouse kitchens.

The kitchen is where I spend a lot of my time. Not just because I love cooking (and it’s where my coffee maker lives) but because it’s nostalgic for me. When I was growing up, my Grandparent’s kitchen was our family’s home base. We spent so many Sunday afternoons sitting around the kitchen table listening to Granddaddy’s stories. Even today, when I go home to visit my mom, we always end up sitting at her kitchen counter talking (and laughing, and arguing, and crying). For me, the kitchen is synonymous with home.

Currently, I’m obsessed with this kitchen from @jamilancasterdesign.

It’s so pretty! And the ladder! I’m in love with the idea of having a ladder in my kitchen now. I’d be able to reach all the shelves (and not get mad when Scott puts dishes away where I can’t reach them!).

I’m also loving her white brick accent wall and the wood beams.

Bathroom

Confession time…Scott and I currently have separate bathrooms. The bathrooms in our current rental are small…tiny…miniscule. Trying to share our ant-sized master bath would have surely ended in mutual destruction (or divorce). Which probably explains why I’ve been so hung up on bathroom ideas lately (though it is nice not having my counter covered in stubble after Scott trims his beard).

I dream of a day when I can have a big, bright, peaceful oasis for a bathroom.

My biggest obsession, though, is garden tubs. More than likely, this is going to be a way-down-the-road type renovation for the home we eventually purchase. But I will make it happen one day.

Garden tubs are another nostalgia point for me. My Grandma always had a big, old-fashioned garden tub in her bathroom. I can remember taking a lot of bubble baths in it when I was a little girl so it’s high on my dream home list. This bathroom design I found on Pinterest is pretty much straight from my dreams.

Home Office

This is a hopefully-sooner-rather-than-later dream of mine. Our current house is pretty small and most of our spare spaces are being used for storage. I did attempt to clean out and organize the nook next to our living room a while back and planned to use it as my home office/craft corner. But then Scott and his trading card collection moved in, so now I do most of my work sitting at our kitchen island.

Once we move again, I’m hoping our next rental home has enough space to allow me to claim a room of my very own (Scott likes to claim that the whole house is my space…but I refer you to the aforementioned nook). I love the idea of creating a space all my own to work and plan DIY projects. One of my potential plans for a space like this is to tackle a few bigger DIY projects and build my own desk and bookshelves. I’m in love with these plans from Shanty 2 Chic (I heart you Ashley & Whitney).

Shiplap

No farmhouse décor is complete without a little shiplap (thanks to Chip & Joanna Gaines, of course).

My fear with shiplap is that I might go a little crazy and shiplap everything (is there a such thing as too much shiplap)?

I’ve seen some gorgeous shiplapped accent walls and kitchen islands. My personal favorite is the whitewashed shiplap look (because, again, I’m all about home décor being bright and open). These are a few of my favorite examples from Pinterest:

Furniture

When we first started setting up house, Scott and I weren’t exactly rolling in dough. A lot of our furniture was sourced from second-hand stores and Craigslist. We’ve been talking about upgrading our furniture for awhile now and it’s something we hope to start doing soon.

This is also where my daydreams will need to make way for a little more reality.

I absolutely love the idea of white upholstered furniture in the living room, like this one from @vintageporch on Instagram.

But she’s so much braver than I am. With three dogs that shed black fur by the handful, I’m pretty sure I’d lose my mind trying to keep a white couch clean. Instead, I plan to trade in our brown leather furniture for a light gray (and, it should go without saying, stain-resistant) upholstery, like this set from Ashley Furniture.

Another update I plan to make soon is our bedding. Again, loving the effect of white bedding in home décor…but, dogs. So this is another area where I’m going to be more realistic and stick with shades of gray (our current bedding actually is gray…but thanks to a teething puppy, it needs to be replaced). Also, pillows. Lots and lots of cute throw pillows.

I can only imagine my list of dream home renovations and décor will only grow as time goes on. And once we actually buy a home and move in, I’ll find plenty of new projects (Scott can attest to my never-ending desire to come up with home improvement projects).

Until then, I’ll keep drooling over Farmhouse feeds on Instagram.
